What we can and can’t supply

We can give you certificates for births, marriages and deaths that happened:

  • in the area administered by Essex County Council, and
  • from 1837.

We can’t give you certificates for births, marriages and deaths that happened:

  • in areas of Essex now run by Southend-on-Sea, Thurrock, London Boroughs of Havering, Barking and Dagenham, Waltham Forest, Newham and Redbridge Councils.
  • anywhere else in the UK or the world.
  • before 1837.

We can’t supply certificates to people outside the UK. Try the General Register Office.

How much does it cost and how long will it take?

Standard service

You can collect, or we will send, your certificate in up to five working days:

  • if the birth, marriage or death happened in the last 28 days, for £7
  • otherwise, £10.

The five working days doesn't include delivery, and if you order outside working hours, start at 9am the next working day.

Fast services

You can collect, or we will send, your certificate within:

  • 48 hours for £18
  • 24 hours for £25

Timings don't include delivery, and if you order outside working hours, start at 9am the next working day.

We also offer, when staffing allows, a 2-hour service for £65 if you visit our office Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm, excluding bank holidays. Please call 03330 132500 first to check availability.

Postage and packaging

Or, collect your certificate from our office Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm or Friday 9am to 4pm. We're closed bank holidays.

Can I order more than one certificate?

You can use our online form to order up to 10 certificates. You’ll only pay once for postage and packaging.
