The Great Flood of 1953: How it affected Canvey Island and its People

A high spring tide, low pressure and high winds caused a storm surge of water down the North Sea, flooding low-lying areas of Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, along with parts of the Low Countries. Three hundred and seven people were killed in England which included 37 residents from Jaywick and 58 on Canvey Island.
