We are very happy to announce that the Essex Record Office Searchroom will be open to the public from the 13th April 2021.
While we are all looking forward to seeing you again, we ask that you think carefully before planning your visit to the ERO. If you are displaying any of the symptoms of Covid-19 or are considered to be at increased risk of contracting Covid-19, the advice is that you should not come to the record office.
It is compulsory to wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces in the UK, when you visit the Essex Record Office, please ensure that you have a face covering that can be worn during you time here unless you fall into one of the exempted categories.
Things will be a little bit different when you arrive in the Searchroom as we have made several changes to ensure we can all maintain social distancing and stay safe. There will be signage to help you to maintain social distancing and we have implemented a more thorough daily cleaning of the building. We are also limiting the number of people allowed into the Searchroom to 25.
To help us prepare for your visit, we are also asking that you book your visit with us in advance. Please do so by emailing email@example.com letting us know your name and the date that you would like to visit. We will then confirm your booking.
When you sign into the Searchroom we will ask for your telephone number to help us support NHS Test and Trace. We will only retain these details for 21 days from your visit.
There will be fewer staff available in the Searchroom, so they will not be able to provide close one-to-one assistance with your queries other than from behind the Searchroom desk. It may also mean that documents will take a while longer to be produced.
In the Searchroom the open access maps and microfilm machines will not be available and there will be no access to the Spalding photographs. Any books that you look at from the open shelves will be quarantined for 72 hours before being returned to the shelves.
There will be a reduced number of desks and Searchroom computers available. A computer will be allocated to you when you arrive and cleaned when you no longer need it. As these are limited, if at all possible, please bring a laptop with you. This can be used on our free guest wifi. Make sure that you bring everything that you need with you as we are not able to lend pencils.
Please note that we are also not able to take cash payments in the Searchroom.
We are also now one of the many record offices using the Archives Card which has replaced all existing CARN and ERO Readers Tickets. Please ensure that you have applied for your Archives Card before you come to visit us by going to the Archives Card Hub website.
If you currently have a readers ticket, you will also be able to order documents in advance on Essex Archives Online.
If you have a query about your research or visiting the Searchroom, please see our Research pages. If you cannot find the answer you are looking for, please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org or 033301 32497.
We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by these changes to our usual service and would like to thank you for your understanding. Please keep checking our social media pages and website for updates.
We would also like to thank you for your support for the Essex Record Office as we continue to preserve and keep secure the archives of Essex for generations to come.
From the 12th April we will also be able to host weddings at the Essex Record Office. As weddings still need to be conducted in a Covid secure manner we can only permit a limited number of guests. For more information, please email the team at email@example.com.
