Volunteer with us

Help us preserve historical records and make them accessible

Volunteers have made a huge contribution to the work of the Essex Record Office over many years. Their time and expertise has enriched our digital catalogue, Essex Archives Online, and helped preserve thousands of historical records in our care.

At the moment we are recruiting volunteers to help:

  • Conserve architectural plans as part of the Chancellor project
  • Catalogue building plans
  • Summarise oral histories preserved in the Essex Sound and Video Archive (ESVA)

What will you get from volunteering?

  • Training and experience in various areas of archival work, from cataloguing to conservation
  • The opportunity to learn more about the history of Essex
  • Contact with unique historical records

How to get involved

Please email us at ero.enquiry@essex.gov.uk outlining why you would like to volunteer with us, what you would be most interested in, and the days you are available to volunteer.

While most volunteers come in to our Searchroom or conservation studio on a weekly or fortnightly basis, there are some people who volunteer with us remotely, with digitised or born-digital records. Let us know if you would like to to explore this option.

Please note that there is no parking available at the ERO. Directions to us can be found here
