How to find the Essex Record Office
We are located on Wharf Road, Chelmsford, Essex CM2 6YT.
Our public entrance is on the path beside the River Chelmer. Please note that if you ask Google Maps to provide you with walking directions, it takes you to the back of the building.

We are a short walk from the centre of Chelmsford.
To reach us from Chelmsford High Street, follow the directions given on the map and images below.
The route uses a public footpath along the riverside. It is even and well lit, but in darker months you may prefer to arrive or leave via Wharf Road.
1. Walk down Chelmsford High Street
2. Turn left down Springfield Road
3. Turn right onto Backnang Square
4. Walk down the riverside path, French’s Walk, going under the arch and then under the road
5. Cross the green bridge over the River Chelmer
6. Follow the footpath right and go under Bow Bridge
7. Turn left to find the public entrance – you’ve arrived!
There are a number of cycle paths that run beside the river to the entrance of the Essex Record Office. These can be found on the Chelmsford Cycle Map.
There are bike racks to the left of the public entrance.
We are a 20-minute walk from Chelmsford railway station and bus station, both on Duke Street.

There are also bus stops at the southern end of Springfield Road and on Parkway, both of which are a short walk from us.
There is no car park at the Essex Record Office.
There are three parking spaces for Blue Badge holders next to our public entrance. You can access these from Wharf Road.
