Simon's talk takes us through what it takes to excavate the early Anglo-Saxon castle at Clavering in NW Essex. We'll hear the intriguing results of the community excavation their last summer and before any ground was disturbed the geophysical, LiDAR, hydrological surveys and detailed historical research that underpins such a project... Oh Yes and the paperwork involved!

Simon Coxall retired as Head of CID in Essex in 2015 and following a number of years as a fieldworker on community and commercial archaeological projects was awarded an MSc in Applied Landscape Archaeology from Oxford University in 2017.He has investigated many sites across Essex, and in France including directing excavations that discovered the lost medieval church of Wenden Parva in NW Essex and the lost collegiate church of the Duke of Gloucester at Pleshey, Essex
