Essex Record Office: Takedown Policy

Essex Record Office: Takedown Policy

The Essex Record Office is the storehouse of Essex history. We look after documents, maps, images and sound and video recordings that together tell the story of nearly 1,000 years of our county’s past. Our mission is to make these resources available for research, study and to connect the residents of Essex with their heritage. We do this through our Searchroom in Chelmsford, our Access Points around the county as well as through our online resources and social media channels.

The Essex Record Office has taken all reasonable steps to identify the rights holders and to establish the copyright position before making material available online.  Where possible, we will seek permission from a rightsholder before making material available.

We are not always able to establish or trace the rights holder for much of our historic materials. In some cases, we will make material available online without consent in the interest of accessibility, where we believe it will not cause damage to the rights holder.

If you believe you are a rights holder and that we have used your property without consent, please get in touch.  Wherever possible we will immediately take down the content while we investigate your claim.  Please send us the following information:

  • The Reference Number of the material if provided
  • The Name of the material
  • The exact URL where you found the image/s
  • The date when you accessed the image/s
  • Your name
  • Your contact details
  • An explanation of why the material should not be publicly available on the Internet
  • Proof that you are the rights holder
  • Any additional information you can provide about other rights holders

Please send this information to:

We will attempt to reach an agreement between the ERO, the original depositor, any additional rights holders, and yourself, with the following possible outcomes:

  1. The material is uploaded again, with the agreement of all parties.
  2. The material is uploaded again with changes, with the agreement of all parties.
  3. The material is permanently kept offline or kept offline until any rights have expired.

The material in question will be kept offline until an agreement has been reached.
