Support for heritage projects

We support heritage projects in various ways, from writing letters of support for funding applications to providing advice and guidance throughout a project and archiving project outputs.

If you would like us to support your project, please let us know as early as possible, so we can discuss the different options available and costs involved.

Visits

We offer two options for group visits:

  • A tour of the searchroom, repositories, and conservation workshop (£90.00)
  • A tour of the searchroom, repositories, and conservation studio with a bespoke document display (£155.00)

Our tours usually last two hours. We offer bookable tours on Friday mornings at 10am – see Group visits for more information and to book.

If you would like to arrange a visit for a different time, or arrange a bespoke document display, please email ero.events@essex.gov.uk.

Training

We offer several training workshops, which can be combined with a tour:

  • Archival research skills workshop
  • Local history workshop
  • Oral history training

Our workshops usually last one hour, while the oral history training is a half day. Workshops can be tailored to your project’s specific needs. To book a workshop and discuss pricing, email ero.events@essex.gov.uk.

Finding archive material

If you need help navigating the catalogue or more information about what records we hold, our archivists will be able to help. Email us at ero.enquiry@essex.gov.uk for guidance.

If you would like us to carry out research on your behalf, use our Search service.

Using archive material

Order digital copies of documents through our Reprographics service. We offer:

  • Research quality copies (watermarked, low resolution JPEGs)
  • Premium copies (where you choose the resolution and file format).

As custodian of the records, we ask that you obtain permission from us before reproducing material in our care.

To request permission to reproduce documents or images in publications, websites, talks, installations, or exhibitions, email ero.enquiry@essex.gov.uk.

Our standard fee for commercial use is £50.00 per image. We do not generally charge usage fees for non-commercial reproduction.

Archiving your project

As the county archive, we collect and preserve documents, photographs, and sound and video recordings relating to Essex, including Southend and Thurrock.

We are especially interested in preserving material that reflects the diversity of modern and historic Essex.

Visit Donate historical records for more information about archiving the results of your project.

Venue hire and filming

We have a lecture theatre and a range of conference rooms available to hire for meetings, talks, and workshops. Catering can be provided.

Visit Venue hire or email ero.reception@essex.gov.uk for more information and our rates.

If you would like to film at the Essex Record Office, email ero.events@essex.gov.uk and ask for our ‘Request to film’ form.
